The Department of Rehabilitation Sciences specialising in psychology focuses its teaching and research activities on the target group of children and adolescents with developmental, learning/performance and social-emotional problems and their reference systems. In doing so, reference is made to various forms of manifestation, explanatory models and support and intervention options on an empirical developmental science basis.

This takes place both academically and practically in the Chair's own Developmental Science Outpatient Centre for Children and Adolescents, where students are taught the basics and routines of practical diagnostics and support with impaired children and adolescents as part of practice-oriented courses.

In Germany, it has been a political goal since 2009 to teach pupils with and without disabilities in an inclusive setting in joint learning groups. The department is involved in the development of an inclusive education system in NRW and beyond in terms of research and also takes this into account in corresponding courses. In terms of content, the development and socialisation of children and adolescents as well as empirically based explanatory approaches and possibilities of diagnostics and evidence-based support for problematic developmental processes are dealt with.

The department maintains intensive international research relationships. For example, there is a long-standing cooperation between the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, USA and the University of Wuppertal, which has been contracted for 8 years. Prof Dr Friedrich Linderkamp is a Graduate Faculty Member of the Center for Youth Engagement (CYE) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst (USA). On the basis of the cooperation agreement, a wide range of activities are developed, such as an annual "International Conference on Inclusion", which takes place alternately in Wuppertal and the USA, joint research activities, publications and supervision of doctoral students.
